Projects

TeamXHealth aims to help the community throughout the year through the various implementations of projects. All projects (excluding Project Health Fair, Research Paper Program, and Integrative Scholars Program) are ideas generated and implemented by undergraduate students. For each project, there is a description and a list of supervisors. Please note that supervisors serve as leaders for the project, aiming to provide guidance to the associated members. Consequently, all projects are highly collaborative; we take pride in the leaders and club members who dedicate themselves to improving their community through their unique project idea.

Project Health Fair

Supervisors – Dr. Tony Hung, Christa Helms (2017-2018), Alisa Molina (2018-2019), Shivani Desai (2018-2019), Justin Bueno (2019-2020), Sarah Hong (2019-2020), Dilagsayini Mylvaganam (2019-2021)

TeamXHealth’s main project is our annual health fair. Taking place in various churches, such as St. Elizabeth in Rowland Heights or St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Monterey Park, TeamXHealth strives to provide various medical services to underrepresented/underserved communities in Los Angeles through collaborating with medical schools, doctors, and organizations.

At our last health fair (2019), we had about 10 different types of services and had served over 300 people in the span of 4 hours. Some of the medical services we provide include flu shots, blood pressure checks and consultations with doctors- all for free. Ultimately, what we hope to accomplish through our health fairs is to serve underprivileged communities by providing them with needed health services and quality care in order to improve their wellbeing and health.

Club members contribute to the Health Fair by recruiting various medical services, under the guidance of officers and president, in addition to volunteering during the health fair. To see the full list of club members, officers, and executives, please refer to “Directory.”

COVID-19 Fundraiser #2 (April 2021 to June 2021)

Supervisors – Dr. Tony Hung and Dilagsayini Mylvaganam

Team Members – [will update soon]

Covid 19 has proved to be one of the most disastrous events. With over 27 million cases and half a million deaths, everybody is severely affected. Countless hospitals across the nation are facing financial barriers in purchasing personal protective equipment (PPE) in order to protect healthcare workers, such as gloves and masks. In order to give back to the countless healthcare workers that are fighting to protect us, TeamXHealth will be fundraising (again) to raise more money that will be used to purchase PPE. This time we will be donating to LA County Hospital after fundraising for 3 months. TeamXHealth will not be keeping any donations; 100% of the donations received will be transferred.

If you are interested in donating, please use our PayPal (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/teamxhealth) and if you have any questions, please contact teamxhealth.ucla@gmail.com. Thank you!

COVID-19 Fundraiser (June 2020 to September 2020)

Supervisors – Dr. Tony Hung and Dilagsayini Mylvaganam

Team Members – Sophia Reyes, Bryan Wu, Somya Panchal

With the emergence of Covid 19 and the implementation of quarantine, 2020 has proved to be a difficult year for everyone. Practically everyone in our community is drastically affected by these new changes, whether it is emotionally, financially, or mentally. Unfortunately, some communities are more affected by Covid 19 than others due to funding, lack of PPE, or being situated in an area with a higher number of cases. That is why to help ease the burden, a group within TeamXHealth has volunteered to raise money for two hospitals that work with underrepresented and underserved communities: Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital. In the span of 2 months, we have raised $750. The money will be used for purchasing PPE equipment for Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital and donated to Covid 19 Emergency Fund for Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Thank you to everyone that has donated and/or have spread the message of our work!

Integrative Scholars Program

In a collaborative effort with the UCLA Center for East-West Medicine, TeamX Health designed an innovative, team-based curriculum for pre-professional students with aims to cultivate student’s potential in shaping the present and future delivery of oncological care. Over a 10-week academic quarter, students are challenged to explore the evolving evidence-based specialty of integrative oncology, and delivered as a “capstone project”, a creative solution to problems facing cancer patients today.

Humans of Oncology

Supervisors – Sarah Hong, Dilagsayini Mylvaganam, Justin Bueno

Team Members – Sophia Reyes, Bryan Wu, Neha Divi, Yan Zhou

Humans of Oncology was created as a platform for patients, providers, families, or caretakers to share their stories. If you have a story you would like to share, we would love to listen! You can anonymously publish your story on our website.

Our vision is that this becomes a place where people aren’t defined by how they are affected by cancer. We want each participant to have a chance to express a unique, personal story; one that you won’t get by reading cancer facts and statistics. We want it to be about human interaction, expression, unity, and healing.

Email us at humansofoncology@gmail.com or go to the contact tab at our website https://humansofoncology.weebly.com/about.html above to get your story published!

Research Paper Program

Supervisor – Dr. Tony Hung

Team Members – Dilagsayini Mylvaganam, Valia Gregory, Justin Bueno, Michelle Tan, Carlyn Wisherop, Brandon Truong, Andy Liu, Aaron Chan, Yan Zhou, Nadine Lin, Abhay Tiwari, Anne Deffebach, Alyssa Besser, Alex Nevin, Tiffany Duarte, Kiara Stanifer

Under the guidance of Dr. Tony Hung, select students within TeamXHealth have the opportunity to develop their writing skills through the publication of a research paper in an academic journal. Through collaboration with group members as well as monthly meetings with Dr. Tony Hung, students are able to learn the core components of their paper, in addition to learning how to effectively write a professional paper. Acceptance to the program is very limited due to the program’s overall focus in helping each student improve their research and critical writing skills. Types of papers that students are currently working include Case Reports, AAIM Perspectives, Brief Observations, Brief Report and Short Report.
